Todd Davis Social Security number and LifeLock
Todd Davis, CEO of Lifelock, was happy to provide his Social Security number in the ads for his company because those ads helped more than a million Americans sign up for Lifelock, not only growing the company, but also providing proactive identity theft protection.
Davis is himself a victim of identity theft, more than a dozen times. The first instance was reportedly when someone took out a $500 payday loan in his name and the company soon contacted Davis for payment.
Once news of the payday loan broke, other instances of identity theft using Davis personal information were discovered. In each instance, LifeLock did exactly what it was supposed to do: Davis was notified, the theft was stopped, and Davis’ credit was protected.
It wasn’t just disgruntled consumers and class action lawyers who raised eyebrows at the ads once news broke that Davis’ identity had been seriously breached either. State agencies in both New York and Montana also investigated the Lifelock advertising campaigns.
The Davis campaign came to an end in the midst of the lawsuits and the eventual settlement with the FTC.
Many consumers wrongly believed that LifeLock could prevent identity theft. This has never been a claim made by LifeLock. The company has always said no one can prevent identity theft – but there are steps you can take to protect yourself, and LifeLock can help with that.
LifeLock offers proactive services, designed to make your information useless to anyone but you. LifeLock will scan the Internet for your information, and the moment it finds your information is compromised, you’ll be notified, shutting down the theft attempt.
